Source: "Zion On The Mississippi," W.O. Forster, C.P.H., St. Louis,MO, 1953: Pg. 542: Johann Gottlob Fiehler and his wife Justine nee. Bock and daughter Ernestine immigrated from Mannsdorf (Mennsdorf) in the Duchy of Saxe-Altenburg, Germany, to Perry County, Missouri in 1838 with the Saxon Lutherans. His occupation was a blacksmith and he was 30 years old when he emigrated. His wife, Justine, was 28 years old and his daughter, Ernestine, was 3 years old. Their ship, "The Copernicus", left Bremen, Germany on 3 NOV 1838 and reached New Orleans on 31 DEC 1838 (59 days). From New Orleans they took the river boat named "The Rienzi" to St. Louis, MO. Source: 1850 US Census: John G. Fiehler's occupation was blacksmith. 1860 US Census: John G. Fiehler's occupation was farmer. Source: Baptism records (Births-1837, #5) of Church in Paitzdorf, Saxe-Altenburg record: 22 April 1837 - the second of three sponsors at the Baptism in Paitzdorf of Herrmann Hemmann, son of Gottfried Hemmann and Maria nee Bachmann was: "Meister Gottlob Fieler, Huf- u. Waffenschmied in Mennsdorf." (blacksmith and armorer, shieldmaker) Address: LaVerne and Karl Boemke saw the old Fiehler Hof in Mennsdorf in July, 1983 on their visit to East Germany. The Police Chief now lives there. The house has the old fachwerk style and the original "Hof" style inside the gate. Source: Fiehler Genealogy, Rudolph Fiehler, July, 1979: Johann Gottlob Fiehler took up land about a mile to the north of Frohna, where the road crosses a branch of the Brazeau Creek. In Forster's book ZION ON THE MISSISSIPPI is a map following Page 448 showing "Bock and Fiehler" as owners of a tract of land near Frohna. The family farm was passed on to two sons, Benjamin and Robert. A great-grandson, Howard Fiehler, now owns that part which was owned by Robert Fiehler and Carl Fiehler. There were four sons and two daughters. 1. Benjamin Fiehler built his home on the upland part of his father's farm. 2. Traugott Fiehler became a blacksmith in Uniontown, about six miles west of Frohna, now on US Highway 61. 3. RobertFiehler inherited that part of the family farm next to the Brazeau Creek now owned by Howard Fiehler. 4. Ernestine married Ernst Rudert. 5. Ehrgott Fiehler. 6. Paulina (Hemmann). Source: 7/25/2001 e-mail message from Delores Darnstaedt discussing her visit to the original Gottlob Fiehler house in Mennsdorf, Thuringia, Germany during June, 2001: "So now I also have been to Mennsdorf/Paitzdorf. The old Fiehler home in Mennsdorf hasn't changed since 1839 (so the lady of the house said) .. A side door from the kitchen (to the old blacksmith shop) was removed .... but otherwise ....even the old ceiling in the livingroom was the same one for all those years." Source: 8/11/2001 e-mail message from Delores Darnstaedt discussing the immigration of our Bock and Fiehler ancestors to Perry County, Missouri with the Saxon Lutheran Immigration of 1839: "Michael Bock, Sr. (age 50) and his son, Michael Bock,Jr. (age 21) also migrated along with Johann Gottlob Fiehler, (age 30) and his wife, Justina nee Bock (age 28) ... & their daughter, Ernestine (age 3) in the Saxon Immigration of 1839. Michael Bock and Johann G. Fiehler bought a tract of land together when they arrived in Perry County, Mo. Mom said she always wondered why her Great-Great-Grand-father had 'gone together' with a 'stranger' to get their land! Now it is all clear --- Michael Bock, Sr. was the father-in-law of Johann Gottlob Fiehler! Michael Bock's wife wouldn't emigrate with him (& son & daughter) but stayed in her home in Germany." Note: I saw this roadsign as we entered Mennsdorf in October 2002: Mennsdorf - Gemeinde Paitzdorf - Landkreis Greiz. Burial: 4 Feb 2003 e-mail from Delores Darnstaedt: " I just read your E-mail and realized I didn't "pass along" the information about Grandpa Johann Gottlob's (Fiehler) death when I got it from Dorothy Weinhold some months ago. As you probably also have found out - he isn't mentioned in the death records in Uniontown and Frohna. Dorothy was up in Perryville looking at records at the courthouse when she came across an order for a tombstone for Johann Gottlob Fiehler. The death dateto be inscribed on it was April 2, 1871. We don't know where he is - or his tombstone. I know they were "members" at Grace in Uniontown." Note: Death Records of Trinity Lutheran Church, Altenburg, MO (translation pg. 3): "Johann Gotthilf Fiehler, youngest son of Johann Gottlob Fiehler from Altenburg, died 29 July 1839, burried ????" |
