Note

~Note: Some of my recollections of 3 Jan 2003: My father, Louis Hemmann recounted to me that during one of the summers while he was a student at Concordia Seminary at Springfield, Illinois, he lived with his aunt Emma and uncle Joe Schmidt in St. Louis and worked in a factory near the Mississippi river that made upolstering for automobile seats. He remembered how he had to walk thru the "red light" district on his way to work. When my mother would tap on the window to get our attention when we, as children, were playing outside, my Dad told my mother that it reminded him of what the women would do as he walked to work in St. Louis. My dad also had very fond memories of his Aunt Emma giving him and his siblings gifts of money (coins) and candy when she and Uncle Joe would come down from St. Louis to visit them on the farm at Uniontown. Also, one time when their mother was sick several of Dad's younger siblings ( I think it was Erna, August, and Johnnie and maybe, Ulysses) lived in St. Louis with their Aunt Emma and Uncle Joe Schmidt. They also helped my dad financially with his Seminary costs.

~Source: 16 Jun 2002 Hemmann Reunion, Grace Lutheran School, Uniontown, MO: Cathy and David Hemmann brought along two old German books that they obtained from David's father, Uncle Johnnie Hemmann. The books originally belonged to Emma C. Hemmann who married Joe Schmidt. They lived in St. Louis. One title (translated) was "Luther's Small Catechism" published in 1895 in St. Louis, MO. The other title (translated) was "Congregational Song Book" published in 1905 in St. Louis, MO. The books are still in good condition.
