Obituary (Rough Draft): Erna T. Hemmann

Erna T. Hemmann, age 87, of San Rafael, California, was called to her heavenly home Friday, June 11, 2004, ten days after suffering a stroke.
Erna was born April 15, 1917 on her parents farm at Greens Creek near Giddings, Texas, the fourth of ten children of Hermann and Emma (Pietsch) Lehmann. She was united in marriage to the Rev. Louis O. Hemmann of Uniontown, Missouri, on June 26,1938. The wedding took place at Bethany Lutheran Church, Greens Creek, where Erna was baptized (6 May 1917) and confirmed (9 June 1930) and where Louis had served his vicarage year. Their marriage of 48 years was blessed with four children.
Erna is remembered and admired for her love and dedication to her family and for her bold and joyful witness to her Christian faith. She worked tirelessly for her family and served at her husband’s side in ministry in congregations in Missouri, Texas and Kansas. (In retirement Pastor Hemmann also assisted at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Santa Rosa, when they moved from Fairview in 1978.) She participated actively in the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League and Dorcas Society.
Erna was an excellent homemaker and enjoyed sewing, baking and gardening; especially as it helped to provide for her family and to stretch limited resources. After her oldest child entered high school, Erna took a job as a nurse’s aide caringfor the elderly in order that each of her children would have the opportunity for higher education. Erna continued to work in nursing homes for over 20 years.
Erna’s survivors are: her four children, Joann (George) Juilly of San Rafael, CA, Eugene (Sylvia) Hemmann of Saint Charles, IL, Oliver (Beth Holstein) Hemmann of Berkely, IL, and Marilynn (John) Neuenburg of San Rafael, CA; six grandchildren:Karla (Juilly) Frigard, Aaron Juilly, Jeffrey Neuenburg, Amanda Hemmann, Michael Hemmann, and Katherine Hemmann; two great granddaughters: Samantha and Lauren Frigard; three brothers: Anton Lehmann of LaGrange, TX, Edwin Lehmann of Conroe, TX,and Herman Lehmann of Plana, TX; and one sister: Gladys (Lehmann) Von Minden of LaGrange, TX.
Preceding Erna in death were: her husband, Louis; three sisters: Hulda Lehmann, Wanda (Lehmann) Kappler, and Ruby (Lehmann) Mueller; two brothers: Martin Lehmann and August Lehmann; and her parents.
A Memorial Service of praise and thanksgiving to God for Ernas’s life is to be held on Wednesday, July 7, 2004, at Trinity Lutheran Church in San Rafael. At Erna’s request, memorial gifts in her memory may be given to: Lutheran Hour Ministries, 660 Mason Ridge Center Drive, St. Louis, MO 63141-8557.
