Shared note
|
He came to the US in 1838 with his mother, Christiane Magdalene, and 2 brothers on the Johann Georg according to "Zion on the Mississippi". He was a widower at time of marriage to Wilhelmine according to Schüßler Family Bible. His birthdate is stated as 23 Sept 1813 according to a document entitled "List of People Concerned with Military Duty" in the Saxon Emigration Documents at Concordia Historical Institute. This document was written prior to emigration. In the 1842 "List of Communicant Members" from Trinity Lutheran Church, St. Louis, his birthday is listed as 24 Sept 1813. Information about first wife and child is also listed in the 1842 list. List is also located in the Saxon Emigration Documents at Concordia Historical Institute. Baptismal record for his first child at Trinity Lutheran Church lists his occupation as Shoemaker and also reports that he was an Elder of the congregation. No record of the death of his first wife and some of the children from his first marriage could be found in the Trinity Lutheran Church records nor in the Immanuel Lutheran Church records, but they are assumed to be dead by the time of his marriage to Wilhelmine Schuessler. Baptismal records of his children with Wilhelmine at Immanuel Lutheran Church, St. Louis, indicates his occupation as Teacher. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Birth: Sep. 24, 1813, Germany Moritz's mother's given name was Christiane. No other information is available for his parents. He arrived in America with his mother and brothers, Ferdinand and Frederick on 07 Jan 1839 at New Orleans. They departed from Bremen, Germany on the ship Johana George. He married Wilhelmine Schuessler in 1849 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, St. Louis (Independent City), Missouri. Children born to Moritz and Wilhelmine were; Christiane Emilie, Johanna Maria, Friedrich Hermann Moritz, Carl Ernst Hermann, Martha Clara, Louise Mathilde, Otto and an Infant. Moritz must have been married prior to his marriage to Wilhelmine. He is shown in records to have had two children, John and Martin, that were both born prior to 1849. Wilhelmine would have been too young to have been their mother. Moritz was a shoemaker and later a school teacher. He was a teacher at Immanuel Lutheran School in St. Louis (Independent City), Missouri from 1857-1880. The day of death inscribed on his marker is incorrect, according to his death record. The inscription is the 12th of May, but the death record indicates that he died the 6th of May. He died of hemilplegia at the age of 66 years, 7 months, and 12days.
